June 2018 Update

June’s Maipelo clinic was busier than May’s. 60 people were seen, including 14 children and 46 adults. One of our volunteers, Claudia, donated a considerable amount of apples to give to the families, but given the big attendance the amount turned out to be spot on.

We are thrilled to report that we saw four negative HIV tests in children under two years old. Needless to say, their parents were just as excited as we were with the news. We also have several babies who are due to be born soon, with all moms-to-be doing well. One of these ladies named Aneni came in with a particularly large tummy, and we found out that she is actually expecting twins! Hopefully because of the treatment provided, their babies will also be born HIV negative.

We also saw a woman named Rejoice who moved to Botswana when she became pregnant last year. Sadly, she could not afford HIV medication in Botswana and did not know about Maipelo when she arrived. In March, she had her son Malcolm, and despite not being able to get the treatment she needs, Malcolm tested HIV negative. She recently learned about Cover the Globe’s work with Maipelo and attended for the first time, where we got her started on medication again. We will continue to monitor Rejoice and Malcolm, and hope that this treatment will allow Malcolm to remain HIV negative.

Another woman brought her husband Victor along to Maipelo for the first time this week. Victor is currently dealing with acute Hepatitis B, and we encouraged him to start taking medication today. Victor is eager to regain his health and go back to work, but he remains deeply jaundiced. We tested his liver enzymes and will see him later this week to see if he is healthy enough to work to support his family again. Over the coming weeks, we will continue to follow up with Victor as he regains his strength.

It is only through the support of generous supporters like you that we are able to continue to provide Aneni, Rejoice, and Victor with the care they need. We hope you will consider donating, or passing along our story to you friends and family. Thank you for stopping by - until next time!
