September 2018 Update

September’s Maipelo Clinic was as busy as ever, with over 40 children and their families attending. It was also a special clinic, as a previous volunteer physician sent over juice, snacks, and candy for the children. Needless to say, they were very happy to receive these treats!

Seven (!) new pregnant women, all due in January, stopped by this month. In addition, we also saw several other pregnant women from past clinics. One of them has seen her platelet count improve as a result of finally getting HIV treatment. Most importantly, we gave medication to all of the ones due soon so that their babies can be born without HIV. This medication can cost as little as $20, but without support from generous donors like you, it would remain inaccessible to these moms-to-be.

We also saw another woman named Tanya who came to us for the first time. Tanya has both HIV and diabetes, but doesn’t have the money to pay for insulin. Our wonderful volunteer physician Rachel provided her with diabetes education and patient literacy. Rachel also gave Tanya money for insulin as well as a referral for routine diabetes care. Finally, Tanya was scheduled to see another volunteer physician Brigid next month to continue the plan of co-managing her HIV and diabetes.

Thank you again for taking the time to learn more about Cover the Globe’s work with Maipelo, and stay posted for more updates! If you would like to subscribe to our mailing list so you can learn more about patients like Tanya, fill out the form below!

Sincerely,

Laura
